Dark Heart

You can’t come back
to this dark heart.
Your hair is blond.
Your skin is tan.
You’ve been standing
in the sunshine
of another man.
You can’t come back
to this dark heart.

You can’t come back
to this dark heart.
Your bags are packed,
your future’s bright.
He has shown you
that love can be light.
You can’t come back
to this dark heart.

But in a little while,
I’ll be leaving too.
I’m going to burn down this building,
watch the memories melt.
I’m going to set fire
to every feeling I have felt.
I won’t grow old
with this dark heart.

I’m going to find myself a seashore
and there I will be reborn
where the morning is so brilliant that it blinds
and the people all have empty minds
and nobody remembers darker times.

And maybe I’ll see you there too
and we’ll find each other new.
Maybe that will be true.

If you keep standing in the hallway
I’m going to start crying.
For a minute there,
I was going
to ask you to stay,
to shine on you
some hopeful ray of light
but no light shines
from a dark heart.

No light shines
from a dark heart.
