Vishnu Dreams the World

In my dream, you were saying
that I make you feel alone.
We were walking through this canyon
filled with giant, painted stones.
There was a stone with a picture on it
of Vishnu, the sleeping god.
And I dragged it through the desert
to prove I could give you something solid.

Help me to believe there’s a point to this.
Help me to believe in a love that sustains.
Help me to believe there is an everlasting bliss,
that after everything we’ve been through,
something beautiful still remains.

In the picture, Vishnu dreams the world,
the jungles, and the seas.
He dreams he’s walking through a desert
with a woman he cannot please.
He does not want to suffer,
but he does not want to wake.
So he dreams himself into a picture
where his sad heart can’t break.

Help me to believe there’s a point to this.
Help me to believe in a love that sustains.
Help me to believe there is an everlasting bliss,
that after everything we’ve been through,
something beautiful still remains.

I dreamed a dream of Vishnu,
who dreamed a dream of me.
I don’t know which of us is singing this:
the man or the deity.
Are we failure or perfection?
We’ve got just one gift, it seems:
to be a heart that is a hole
at the center of a thousand dreams.

Help me to believe there’s a point to this.
Help me to believe in a love that sustains.
Help me to believe there is an everlasting bliss,
that after everything we’ve been through,
something beautiful still remains.
